Step 1: Preheat and Prep Dish
-
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Lightly grease a 9x13” casserole dish with oil or cooking spray.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
-
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into small, bite-sized pieces. Place them evenly in the prepared dish.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, 3 tablespoons of flour, water, lemon juice, maple syrup (or coconut sugar), cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Pour this mixture over the apples, tossing gently to coat them evenly.
Step 3: Make the Topping
-
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, coconut sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold vegan butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the mixture until it forms a crumbly texture.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the dish.
Step 4: Bake the Apple Crisp
-
Place the dish in the center rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Step 5: Serve
-
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 5–10 minutes. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vegan ice cream or a cup of tea or coffee.

Note
- Tips:
- For a sweeter dessert, you can add a bit more maple syrup to the filling or drizzle it on top before serving.
- Use a mix of apple varieties for a balance of sweetness and tartness (e.g., Granny Smith and Honeycrisp).
- Warnings:
- Ensure the butter for the topping is cold for the best crumbly texture.
- Watch the oven during the last 5 minutes of baking to avoid over-browning the topping.
